Summer Fun Ideas for the Whole Family

Back to school items have hit the shelves, but that doesn’t mean summer’s completely over. Before your crew heads back to school, make a few more family memories – even in your own home or neighborhood. Here are some ideas to help you make the most out of your remaining months of summer.

Stay up Late
Stay up late and give the kids a jar to catch fireflies. Gather around the community firepit, and enjoy roasting hot dogs and s’mores. It’s summer, so make some after-dark memories while you still have the chance to sleep in.

Explore Nature
Grab your bikes and head to a local forest preserve or trail to go for a ride. Explore a nearby creek and see what wildlife you can find. Grab your kayak and go out on Holding Lake. Whatever natural activities you’ve been thinking about, now is the time to do it!

Go to the Zoo
The North Carolina Zoo, less than 2 hours from Holding Village, is a great place to go wild and enjoy seeing wildlife up close and personal. Summer is a great time to visit, when animals are active and staff is abundant, waiting to answer your question and host talks or demonstrations. The Conservators Center, a safe haven for big cats and wildlife, is located just outside of Burlington and is another great option for getting outdoors and in touch with nature.

Have a Party
It may not be someone’s birthday, but why not throw a party? Have some friends over for a cookout, or host a luau by the community pool and picnic shelter. You will love the chance to get together with friends, and your kids will enjoy an excuse to spend some time in the water.

Make Your Own Ice Cream
Purchase an ice cream maker or learn to make ice cream in a bag. After you’ve made a tasty creation, set up an ice cream sundae buffet in your home. Don’t worry if it doesn’t turn out as you hoped- the Dairy Depot it conveniently located right next door to Holding Village!

Paint with Ice
If your kids are young or young at heart, make ice paint. Mix washable tempera paint with water in ice trays and cover with plastic wrap. Place craft popsicle sticks into the paint through the plastic wrap, and freeze. Once frozen, head outside and paint a masterpiece!

Summer fun can be as simple as catching fireflies or it can be an adventure at a nearby attraction. No matter what you choose, make this the summer that you make memories as a family. When you look back, you will be glad you did.
