Part of what makes living in Wake Forest so wonderful is its strong sense of community. The people, in essence, make the place. This spring, Holding Village is thrilled to serve as a grand sponsor of the eleventh annual Field of Dreams ballpark event to be held Wednesday, May 8. This groundbreaking program created by instructors at Wake Forest High School brings an exciting day of baseball, fun and friendship to students with special needs. We feel it’s an outing that perfectly represents the values and traditions of our neighborhood.
Field of Dreams was created by Wake Forest High School special education teacher Gail Tucker and the Wake Forest Army JROTC, led by Sargent Major Ginger Cribb. Coached by varsity athletes and assisted by cadet volunteers, kids who might otherwise not have the opportunity to play high school sports receive a day packed with a series of baseball matchups where they’re the stars. The program allows these young athletes the chance to wear their team’s colors and represent their high schools, which is a big dream come true for many. They’ll bat, run and score to the cheers of a supportive crowd!
Players will come from 10 Wake County high schools and participate in five games. Special needs students will be matched with varsity baseball players as “buddies,” while cadets from Wake Forest High School’s JROTC program help organize and staff the event. Field of Dreams has gained in popularity and appeal over the years, with other schools across the nation launching similar programs on their own baseball diamonds.
The public is welcome to attend, so come out and bring your friends, family and favorite baseball cap! The event covers every baseball diamond at The North Wake Baseball Complex at The Factory. Participants and fans will have access to drinks and snacks, photographs and area sports mascots. The festivities will conclude with an awards ceremony.
Join your neighbors for a day with America’s favorite pastime on Wednesday, May 8 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the North Wake Baseball Complex at The Factory, located at 1845 Grandmark Street, Wake Forest, NC 27587.
